I imagine our defensive approach requires a lot of focus and they have very very specific instructions. So mental fatigue is also playing a part due to frequency of games.
Think it’s a few things:
- insufficient rotation (norgaard/MLS underused)
- mental fatigue
- Gabi looks worse since injury
- other teams have figured us out a bit and are stifling us better, causing us to hoof it clear
- lack of forward quality: sometimes we look knackered up front but to an extent I think that’s just a function of poor decision making by non elite players

Although in the form we are in recently and with key players either hobbled or working their back from a hobbling, it feels like any result tonight is going to have to be earnt though fortune and fortitude in a brutal last stand of sacrifice and herosim. I thought we played relatively well in the early exchanges against Newcastle. Some clever interplay between our creative players, and then the goal. However after Havertz went off we lost all composure. And by the end of the contest we'd been outshot and outpossessed, at home, by a mid-table rival.
An interesting thesis is have the players lost faith in Gyok? Time and again this season they've watched him lose the ball or the battle. We've all played with a guy that was significantly less skilled than the rest of the group, or was simply disliked. And how that affected the team. Is there a reluctance to pass to Gyok? A reticence that means players take an extra touch or turn away and look for another option instead of instinctively releasing the ball to him?
As little as Jesus has done to demand a starting berth should he start over Gyok? He's arguably even more profligate, but at least offers better link up play, and chemistry with Martinelli. Right now we've got a limp Gyok, who's also firing blanks. Has he earnt a start? Can a barnacle ride a tricycle?
On a side note. I've spent most of the season living in Jakarta, watching the games very late, with little chance for local interaction. But one saturday night I was at an event and a game was about to start. Everton at home. It was after 10pm and I was thinking the team sheets would be out and was about to check, when a small lady in front of me took out her phone. The illumination of the screen drew my attention and what should I spy but the iconic cannon in the top corner. I gave her shoulder a tap and we had a chat about Arsenal and she showed me the lineup. After the event we watched the first half together on her phone. She's a 20 something university student and said she's been reading Arseblog every day for a number of years now. Even with the analytics showing you where readers are, I thought this was a poignant personable moment affirming how connected all Arsenal fans are even though we hail from such unlikely corners of this vast thunderdome. Just watched last night's highlights. Yes it must have been entertaining, and there was some great attacking, but also some piss-poor defending. If we can get past Atleti, we can win the final. Use the women's team as an example of what's possible. Last season, they finished the league way behind Chelsea, who were battered 8-2 by Barcelona in the semi-finals (4-1 in each leg), but we went on to put in a sound defensive performance in the final to win 1-0. And it wasn't a "smash and grab" — Barça had more chances to score than Arsenal women, and Daphne van Domselaar played well in our goal, but I'd argue that Cata Coll in the Barça goal made the best two saves of the match. So, no fear!

The big difference I noticed between our attack and both teams yesterday, is how locked and loaded they are when they are in threatening positions. Almost basketball like in their precision. In fairnerss, maybe Bayern did bungle a few huge chances with looney tunes clumsiness, but that's what we're like most of the time.
