Seems like he's trying to make a name for himself, and what better way than to single out the loan signing? Reminds me of Amorin's sidelining of Mainoo, which has proven to be unnecessary and driven by principle rather than fact judging by his performances since Carrick reinstated him.

I suspect the manager said that about Ethan cos it's Arsenal and it'll generate headlines, especially with an excitable online fan base who'll react if our tea lady was accused of releasing a silent but deadly fart on a windy day in the North Bank!

What annoys me is attacking prowess really does seem to be down the pecking order and defensive capabilities in our midfield and forward players seem to be prioritised.

Agree 100% on both. It was a lot of money to spend on a player who doesn't appear in any way shape or form better than Nwaneri. With MLS, we don't know what happens in training, but if they haven't been teaching him to play that position then it seems pretty silly to me. No, it doesn't make sense. Part of the joy of supporting Arsenal is watching players come through and thrive. It binds me to the club in a way I cannot describe, partly cos I suspect it's the nebulous DNA thing. Also, after being scarred by so many players Wenger developed and gave opportunities to only to watch them turn their backs on him as soon as other big clubs fluttered eyelashes at them, I think our academy players are way less likely to flounce off like that, although I accept the cases of Heaven and Chido may undermine that point.

That is why clubs have academies, you occasionally get one or two gems who become permanent fixtures while the rest are a level below what the manager wants and will be sold for a reasonable price to enable purchasing a better player.
ESR, Nelson, Patino, Balogun, Nketiah, Willock the list goes on of players who some of us thought would be regulars and are now either bit part players or playing at a lower level.

Out of the two I would have thought Nwaneri would have been the better bet but I am not sure Arteta is interested in keeping him.

I'm not sure "witch" works because, presumably, Arteta didn't actually want that outcome, in which case he would be the world's worst witch or even an anti-witch.
Maybe it's about Arteta giving the accidental evil eye, in which case all Arsenal players should be handed protective amulets immediately.
"Begizko" means evil eye in Basque (I looked it up), although I suspect it's of the non-accidental variety.
In any case, I think there's a perfectly acceptable Castilian/English phrase to sum up Arteta's injury jinx, if indeed there is one: es un puto gafe/he's a fucking Jonah

The BBC published some data in January. They did number of injuries but more interestingly days lost. On the latter we were behind only Newcastle and Spurs but to be honest we weren't that far away from other clubs. We'd lost 603 days and City 512. We'd had 19 injuries and they'd had 16. I guess you take, for example, Jesus out of the mix and the difference in days disappears. I think it is what it is. Players get injured. I think the bigger issue is why our backups aren't at the level (Noni and Vik?) and why some of our players look knackered.
0368a

brightongooner @ 08:37 | Apr 27, 2026
If you do a quick Google there's lots of injury data out there and we're fairly average in terms of the number of injuries.

The problem is if you're, for example, Brentford then lots of injuries might be the difference between 10th and 6th but our margins are really fine which means the impact is seismic.

Although that why we have big squad. I think the issue isn't injuries per se. It's that players like Noni and Vik have struggled. The drop off shouldn't be this big when we've spent what we've spent.

Well in goat-felcher.

Raya has 16 clean sheets out of 34 league games.

We need to work on our finishing.

Maybe just get everyone to kick it reallly hard against that wardrobe we’ve been playing ...
We just need to play a lion and a witch with him to get the best out of him

Well blogged.

I would love to see similar numbers for other teams. Is anyone aware of a source?

Those numbers look terrible but maybe every team has similar figures.
Transfermarkt - here's the Arsenal one broken down competition by competition: https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-arsenal…

You can get the same for all the teams

Ditto Ben White the mentality monster.
Downside he looks permanently physically broken.
Ditto Bukayo. Kicked up and down.Arteta said he had to learn to take all abuse. Seems to be paying for it now. Hope he gets back to what he was.
Our players give a lot. Absence of great strikers means they have to give even more. No one taking the pressure off at the top.
They are like inverse Van Persies.
The Dutch Davy Crocket was allegedly an expert at managing his career. Clocking in 12 games a season. Until it was time to showcase for a move. Then the glory season for another team.

No point me pretending to be a sports physiologist.
But.....a lot of sprinting. We funnel/sprint back like demons. A lot of pressing.
We are a physical side.
We are big. More strain on joints etc.
Every game is a struggle. Wolves at home.Championship sides in the FA cup.
It's like every fixture pushes us further into the red zone. A friendly tie against Islington under 9s would involve extra time, fine margins, finally sealed by an own goal from a set piece in the 119th minute. The exception being Sp*!s. No game is a rest.
A bit like Havertz, Odegaard chased like a dervish. He seemed to be powered by some nuclear version of Duracel batteries. Then he wasnt. He now looks like he is the only man from his unit to survive 3 years on the Burma railway.Long narrow road to the Northbank.
Dunno. Always easy to forget how many injuries other teams get too.
But still..
