May we hope that, if we make it to the final, at least an opposition vs QSG or Bayern might provide some entertainment, win or lose?
All I will say is we played better than against Bournemouth, thank fuck for that.
Good thing we scored that late goal in Lisbon, as enduring an extra 30 min if it had come to that would have been a killer.
I'm kind of OK with boring City to death on Sunday though, but I'm really sick of watching us.

A number of famous top level strikers began by playing non_ league football.
Elite strikers, it seems ,more than other positions can be late developers.
Famous among these are Ian Wright, Alan Smith, Jamie Vardy, Troy Deenie. Elite players playing at a non league level.
Victor Gjokeres is the diametric opposite . He is a non league player playing at the elite level. With performances like tonight's he would not look out of place at any non league side in the country.

I think this is where our style of play is so dissatisfying. Today was an objectively massive achievement but it all feels so flat. Remember Rice’s free kicks against Madrid? Would the game stick so much in the memory, would we hang onto that game so much, if we had slogged it out and won 1-0 with a Hincapie headed goal?

Just looking at the very brief highlights on BBC web site. When Trossard hit the post from the corner, I don't think that he intended to head it back into the mixer. From the angle they showed it, it looked like the goalie anticipated that Trossard was going to head it back across and did leave a gap. I genuinely think that Trossard was going for goal. Though from there, he didn't have much to aim at, but it was the right thing to attempt.

We probably don't go 3v1 or 5 in attack due to the fear of over-committing and being caught on the counterattack.

I agree that everything is complicated and contrived.

It would be sustainable IF Arteta bothered to make use of the enormous squad he’s had all season

MLS, Hincapie, Calafiori - have the minutes been shared reasonably there? Bear in mind H+C can both play CB too, but Gabriel’s been in the side all year, and now he looks average?

No MLS taking minutes off Rice
No Norgaard taking minutes off Zubimendi

We are going to need Zubi fresh on Sunday - boggles the mind that he stayed on the whole game today. Can we really not trust norgaard at all? Even with Rice holding his hand?

He needs someone to play off.. All of our forward plays seems to be based on individuality. No connections.. no 1-2s.. Marti and Noni always having to beat 3 players and absolutely no one among a run for them.
And if a run is played, it’s ignored. Appalling stuff.

Would be complete euphoria if he rouses us out of our slumbe, but truth is he's not ready yet. Defenders seem to have caught on to his patterns now, he's been dispossessed cheaply too many times. Speaking of which, Martinelli after around 65' or so became the most predictable human being in existence. Their defender read him like a book, but he did play well overall.

Apparently Neur made a mistake for Real's opening goal. Also, the BBC commentary describes both sets of full backs as abandoning defending. Why Bayern have been so gung-ho when they had a 2-1 lead is a mystery. Similar to us nearly getting caught on the break unnecessarily from our free kick cos we stupidly pushed everyone up. Thankfully Martinelli's pace saved us.

And if they got 4-2-4 and say 'play through us'?

This is my worry now. There is a blueprint.
It will be vital for us to tolerate the jeoperdy in receiving under pressure, and not getting rid right away. At least sometimes, otherwise we will be ceding all the control away.
And then when we try to bypass the middle with long kicks, we really have to commit to it. There's gotta be a sign we're going long so everyone crouds the area between halfway and 18 yard line. No more panicked hoofs towards a stranded Gyok with 4 defenders to fight off.

Yeah but that is nerves and being reactive which we obviously have to change.

I see no other choice then being on the front foot and building confidence. These guys can play this way. We've seen it against RM and Bayern. Hell we've see it against City this season for long stretches of that home game in the fall.

Copied from "Just Arsenal" status on Facebook. And it's spot on, really.

Rival fans use Arsenal hate as a distraction from how terribly their club is doing…

> United have just played their shortest season in 111 years. No European football. Knocked out of every cup in round 1. The only club to gift Tottenham a trophy in the past 20 years.

> Chelsea sacked their cup winning manager, for some BlueCo ‘company man’ fraud that’s just lost 3 on the trot in the hunt for Europe. Half of their best players just went on a mid-season press run criticising the club and flirting with Madrid. Looking set for another season in the Europa Conference League. Seems fitting for a manager of Roseniors calibre.

>Liverpool spent 500m and somehow got worse. Officially the worst Premier League title defence of all time. Had Slot criticise the rest of the league for being ‘anti-football’ and then adopted the very same tactics weeks later because he ironically couldn’t ‘buy’ a win. Salah’s leaving. Robertson’s leaving. But hey, if FSG want another season of Slot ball, at least he might win you a Europa League.

> and Tottenham… I don’t even need to explain it. But I will. Won a cup. Instantly sacked the man that did it. Hired 3 different managers. Fans didn’t want any of them. All have failed miserably. No wins since December. Now 18th in the league. Spent 2 years fighting relegation. Medical staff working against them. Romero is somehow their captain, yet he actively tries to get sent off every game. Genuinely embarrassing.

So actually when I think about it. No wonder you lot just end up supporting Man City every week. Despite the fact that they are the most fraudulent team in the league, still facing 115 charges, and they dunk on your team at every given opportunity. I guess anything is better than supporting your own washed club. 👍

I'd like to see our LB completely shut down their right winger Catamo much better than last time. He's really limited as a winger and we really ought to nullify him better. Don't know whether they'll get Hjulmland back, Gyok's sscandi friend. He's like a more limited and defensive Rice, would be better for us if he was sidelined

Morning folks. It's weird isn't it. Last year at this point our title chances were already written off, knocked out of both cups, injury crises and red cards galore and yet we were really up for the Real matches. We cale into the PSG match ready to put them to the sword too, despite the huge absences.
This year we are in a much better starting point in this stage of the season, but results turn negative and we're already writing ourselves off. Maybe we won't manage to crawl past the finish line, but I think if we go down we'll go down swinging. I don't see a collapse happening with these lads. It's just that they're stunted from playing to their level, doesn't suddenly make all the opponents 1970s Brazil

Arteta’s a bit cringy. Not knocking him for it; he just is. If any other PL manager - not least one managing a rival outfit - said or did some of the shit he has, we would rinse them like vegetables. ...
The Anfield stuff is actually a very good idea. To try and prepare players in different ways is very innovative. Nobody would have mocked us had we won there.

Rupture confirmed just now as I see. :-(
But I ask myself, and I was actually annoyed by the commentators' generic comments about Achilles ruptures symptomes, etc., as they have no expert knowledge, and not every Achilles rupture is the same or leads to the same thing as I am very well placed to know.
Maybe the cleanest, out of violent contact rather than out of the blue, are easier to deal with. But there's no 'you can't put your foot down or stand' in all cases.

We're all disappointed by Saturday, but logging on this morning to find definitive statements about failing and ending the season with nothing has been really disappointing. I didn't know we had soothsayers on the Arses. I would appreciate six numbers for tonight's lottery, ta.

Arteta saying "No fear. Pure fire." seems to have Kevin Keegan vibes written all over it unfortunately. Keegan in the 1995-96 season famously said of Utd "I would love it if we beat them! Love it!"

Fucking injuries! We're not the only club to suffer them, but jeez! I'm reluctant to follow the "running players into the ground" narrative, but he hasn't done himself any favours by giving limited time to so many players. I know they haven't exactly pulled up trees, but who knows what difference regular playing time would have made?

I'd love to hear something along the lines of:
"It’s a 'slump', is it? That’s a lovely, polite word. Personally I’d call it a collective decision by the front three to social distance from the opposition penalty area. But look, we’ll go back to the training ground, we’ll analyze the 'lip suppression' of the left-back, and we’ll try to remember that the goal is the bit with the white net, not the corner flag. What more do you want? Next question.."
But alas, sport is taken too seriously.

As he said himself 'What else can they say?'.

I think we get a bit too focused on the words, which only really matter when we don't perform. Perform, and they can stand on soapboxes telling dirty Limericks for all I care.

Hope you continue to improve, NB. Taking into account your present state of mind, I'm curious about what you want them to say? They're facing questions - often snide and knowing - from the press, millions of Arsenal fans across the world are on edge, shit is constantly being chucked at us, supporters of most other clubs would love us to fail again...I'm genuinely interested in what you would like them to say because I think anything other than trying to exude confidence and give supporters hope would be utterly detrimental.

I genuinely have no idea what to expect from tonight. I think we're as likely to get knocked out and crumble against City, as we are to go through to the semis and pull off something historic in Manchester. That being the case, I'm not going to worry about it, the matches will happen, and they will end, and I'll be somewhere to see them happen. But no more emotional investment from me.
(Unless we win the league, then I'll have a few beers and make a scrapbook lol)

Over the 2 legs it was 'braindead' stuff from Barca.... almost a carbon copy of some of the idoicy i've seen from Arsenal in the past...
And look at PSG last night, happy to sit back and soak up some pressure as needed....
As for Saka achilles issue, it's almost as if having it kicked relentlessly for 5 years with impunity may have some sort of effect on it.....

A fast start and early goal can alleviate some if not all of the nerves and enable us to get some sort of rhythm, also need somebody to accidentally lock the dressing room door while Artetas on the bog

Heh! Flapper on the sideline 😂
Sadly, I think that's been a big issue, how he transmits nervousness and cution. But he's extremely charismatic ina dour way and he's convinced the players his project is right. The way Eze is essentially parrotting Arteta's earlier statements about how exciting this moment is, ignoring the reality of the tension that is all around. I don't think they should succumb to the tension, but the truly courageous thing to do is look it squarely in the eye. It feels like this team is in denial and that means as soon as things get bumpy, they all look perplexed and can't react.

A win tonight would definitely help for Sunday. But at 1-0 up, all I can see is them trying to keep it tightb and letting a goal in and then it's panic stations. I just hope we have Timber and Calafiori back but it's been so changeable anyway, they could just as easily be culprits for any mistakes.

It's too early for talk of new managers. Let's get through this season, but it will be earth shattering if we end up with nothing. And I don't want to hear a single person say "second place and quarter-finals, we'd have been happy with that 7 years ago". Even Emery got us to a final, Wenger won three FA cups in his worst spell at the end.

Nah, second place and quarter-finals, if that's what we're left with after all this investment and all this hype is a disaster and definitely I would want to see the back of him.

But we're not there yet, savour these moments, let's be excited. Miracles can still happen...

You are probably right, if they can't lift themselves for a final surge then we either need a new man at the helm, which is not likely unless Arteta decides to walk as he is making money for the club, or giving him the chequebook again which would hinder a new manager later down the line.

One thing we can't afford is another jam tomorrow scenario that seemed to sum up Arsenes final years.

Ultimately it's down to the players, if they can cancel out the noise and ignore the flapper on the sideline who knows what might happen.

Second day off Ritalin so feeling a bit jittery, please take that into consideration when I say the following. I think we'll get knocked out tonight and get thumped on Sunday. I think we've gone, all our faults exposed. Eze saying this "excitement" thing is the manager speaking, it's all denialism. But what else can they say? Our forwards have been exposed as limited, all of them. I'd love them to prove me wrong, but I just can't allow myself to hope and be crushed again. They have the power to change their fate and the fate of all our fans. I just don't think they hav it in them. We'll see.

A win tonight is just as important as an early goal and settler this weekend. Lose tonight and the balloon is well and truly pricked, the confidence will drain in front of our eyes and if we were to concede early on Sunday after losing this match then I fear for us getting a right spanking.
We also have to remember that if we do collapse we could lose our best players over the summer and being world cup year finding decent replacements is going to be a challenge.

Two matches to save not just this season but to stop us declining into mediocrity and back into the Europa league.
