Morning Mrs. As for our cats, I had several attacks of Feline Purralysis during the game though she let me get up five minutes after the half time whistle to have a pee and make a coffee for the second half. The other one sleeps with us but if I sit up she demands a fuss and tries to grab me with her claws if I try to stand up! 😽😻

You expect him to go down the touchline before aiming an aimless cross to no-one in particular. Instead he used bursts of speed to dribble into the 10 position before playing a lovely ball to King Kai. Equally impressive was when he turned up at left back when Ricky had been pulled inside and prevented the winger from being able to measure his cross.

That girl doing the interview in two languages, skill
I thought she was amazing. When she realised she was interviewing the odd job man, she didn't flinch. I was especially impressed when he asked if she'd seen his bag of spanners and she pretended to translate that Sporting had "played a very good team and remained competitive". She then asked where he bought his gilet, and he became animated and replied that he was wearing it as he lost a bet. To which she 'translated' that they would address challenges in training, before suggesting to him that he should try to get gitet-related advice from SP2.

All very impressive.....but a bit confusing.

Absolutely, the only reason to bring Nelli off the bench for the last half hour is because their backs will be fatigued. Trossard isn't even lukewarm let alone simmering.

The complete shut out of MLS from the team is concerning. We miss his turn and driving runs through the middle
MLS has not looked good enough in the last few matches to displace either Cala or Hincapie at FB or any of the starters in the midfield. He may get that way with more minutes, but the stakes in some many matches in the second half of the season are tough to justify that. It may be better to send him on loan and let him get the minutes that way. I know we were all dubious about Saliba going out, but it worked a charm for him.

Great to get the win tonight but that was hard work to get through. Brilliant goal-keeping from Raya has kept us in the tie. Hopefully next week, in the return leg, we don't play for the 0-0 draw as they will definitely come at us. Let's hope the win helps boost the confidence ahead of the early home game against the Cherries on Saturday.

Saliba is not great when he has too much time, he seems to switch off. He is quality no doubt, but he has those lapses in him. Also, he is very handsy with attackers when they have their back to him, I'm surprised he doesn't get called for fouls way more often

Not secure enough on the ball, hasn’t got the passing range. Great driving runs and his absence has been unfortunate but Hincapié was better and Calafiori also. Midfield needs even more elite class. Zubi is very good but we need more class there not less. I struggle to see where MLS fit now tbh.

It makes all the sense when you realise who’s made this the central tactic. It’s Arteta’s central philosophy. It’s caution first and it numbs the attacking instincts. Players afraid to play one touch and the aggressive forward pass.

Safety first. Playing quick vertical balls can result in giving up the ball. I just wish we'd go for it more.

It’s a lack of awareness that elite players have. It’s like he doesn’t have the feel of when he’s made the space. Time and again he checks back or takes it back on to his right to the byline for the cross when he already sold the defender. I find it soooo frustrating to watch.

Thanks for posting this. I barely slept last night thinking about our injuries and the bad luck which prevented us from winning at least four more league titles. Jimmy Floyd Hasslebank last minute header which a cranial shattering jump by Nelson Vivas should have prevented; Abromivich buying Chelsea the year we finished second; the Tayloring of Eduardo's leg; Owen Hargreaves staying fit enough to play against us and score that free kick; Saliba's injury and Holding trying to play like him rather than his own game; those missed chances against Villa, which were preceded by the head scratching performances against Fulham and West Ham; Jorghinho getting caught on the ball against Spurs which led to a 2-2 draw; Partey playing right back and Gabriel on the bench in our 2-2 draw against Fulham in the home game when Saka's misplaced pass led to their opening goal...

I shouldn't have done this to myself or the rest of you. I'm really sorry, but it seems that slice of luck our rivals enjoy (Utd's treble in 99 was the pinnacle of luck) seems to evade us at key moments. I sincerely hope this year is different.

That's not what consolation means. Of course neither domestic cup (or even both) would make up for blowing the league, especially from the position we're in. I don't think any Arsenal fan anywhere would try to make the argument they would.

Fuck the consolations, if we'd blown the league and CL no measly Carabao and FA cup would have made up for it for me or many others. They would have been the icing on the cake. It's not even about the CL. Obviously a Sporting win would give us some lift, but beat Bournemouth AND City and we can prepare the bunting. Good shout, but there's competition! Merino's injury was pretty devastating too as he was becoming regularly effective for us. Gyökeres's just as he was finding his first bit of form and the same with Eze just recently after he had such a great CL performance... made harder by him saying not to worry in the post-match interview. Saka's ongoing struggles have affected our scoring and obviously there's Ødeaagrd's several absences. But, yeah, Gabriel is a leader in so many ways and that was the first of the ones that really hit.

Aaron Ramsey was great as the rampaging midfielder with a knack for crashing the penalty area and scoring lots of goals, often at important times. I used to think that Olivier Giroud, who always seemed aware of what was going on around him, was the perfect physical yet clever striker, who, if his route to goal was blocked, was excellent at laying the ball back for an onrushing midfielder. Ramsey got a lot of goals without Ollie's help, but also a lot with it, too. Two players that helped each other a lot.

I agree about Havertz and Gyökeres, though it might mean putting him on the left wing which I don't think Arteta's ever done. And infuriating to read some young tactico online explain why they don't go well together, something about being "too vertical" which tells you everything about (some) modern influencers' views of the game.

This where George Graham style relentless drilling of crossing and shooting would have gone some way towards compensating for the dribbling and beating your man deficiencies. Martinelli proved he can bang 'em during the 2022/23 season, so it's not as if we lack evidence of his ability. As for Trossard, yes, I agree. This is why he can be so frustrating. The guy has all the ingredients to be a consistent difference maker, but too many times he tries the difficult pass when the easy option would do, or he loses the ball when not under pressure. An in-form is a deadly weapon in terms of shooting and creating chances.

I honestly hope we can hold on to the premiership. CL would be a massive bonus of course but not overly bothered by it. Premiership is the big one! If he gets that, then he’s done what he said he would. If we capitulate again after leading all season… then not sure what to do with that…

I don't see it as "relying" on. We rely on all the players and yes he's just 16 and the expectation is that he'll be Messi in every game. But here's the thing, he is playing well, to be honest he is already a better player on the ball than Madueke, but Madueke has that extra physicality and athleticism you'd expect from a man next to a boy. As for the senior pros, I say time and again they are all trying their best, but some of them lack quality and it shows in key moments. Martinelli is one such example, Trossard another, players who can have good games, good streaks, but can't sustain it because they have flaws to their game. I do hope that Zubimendi steps up, that Gabriel and Saliba are fully fit. I'd be inclined to go Mosquera at RB over White and Madueke can play tonight on the right, but for Bournemouth I think Dowman starting with Gyökeres can help us get those points in the bag early.

There are originals and then there are copies that lose something in the translation. Cruyff was the original (though to be fair he took his ideas from Rinus Michels but he did revolutionise Barca). Wenger too was an original.

I really don’t much like Ronay’s smug prose or attitude of mocking Arsenal (and other recent more political articles have confirmed what a dick he really is), but I do get his “ChatGTP” comparison. Sure, Arteta has had less investment in the truly elite players Pep has always had in attack, but there does seem to be a feeling Arteta over-emphasises the schemas and loses spontaneity.

Still, as I said, none of that chatter matters if we win our next four games anyway, anyhow. They can all scream blue murder after that. We just want that league title. We need it just to give Arteta above all some return on the immense work he’s put in. His style of football isn’t to my liking, I didn’t mind tiki-taka because I loved Iniesta, Xavi and Messi as players and players always make tactics.

Just play Dowman more and get the ball to Gyökeres. He can do the rest.

This is preposterous. How does any manager learn? Ferguson was on the brink of being sacked after four or five years of Utd going nowhere;. he'll forever be indebted to Mark Robbins and that huge slice of luck which won them the game against Coventry. I've said it before, but luck plays a big part in football clubs winning trophies as it does in life, the latter to an absurd and outsized degree.
