Someone noted it earlier, but Utd’s opener was from a corner. Commentary lauding it as a masterful delivery and finish. I’m not being sensitive about this, but if it was us, the narrative is completely different.

Still, who cares, we are almost there now. Three massive important cup games to navigate, before the early KO and a chance to stretch the lead to 12 points.

I've been told that Man Utd had discussions with Unai Emery shortly before they hired Carrick. Senior management had full contact and discussions with Emery. Everything was set up. Agents back and forth. Secret discussions between Villa and United. Unai liked the terms. The clubs liked the terms. Unai took some time with his family to discuss. They were in tears. His wife loved United. His children adored it. Finally, their father would get respect in the position he had worked his entire life towards. They set the date.

The only problem was it was supposed to be a handshake agreement and instead Unai fucked off down the tunnel.

As a teacher I would disagree, Mike. I'm assuming this happened in a classroom and, as such, the adult in the room has to take responsibility for ensuring that they are both professional and compassionate. It wouldn't have been impossible for one of the students to have been connected in some way with a victim. You just shouldn't take that chance.

I don't think it warranted the sack.

I knew two individuals who were missing after Hillsborough. They couldn't be contacted. They didn't have mobile phones. I was going out with someone who's cousin couldn't be contacted. It was an awful time.

A couple of days layer I was sitting in a large room in Hatton Garden in Liverpool manning the phones. It was silent until 3.30/4pm. Then the phones rang. Lots of them. We had to look for names in a list on typed paper.

I can honestly say ot was one if the most terrifying events of my life. I explained I would check tje list several times before answering. On the third call, I asked for the full name, in case the person was known by a middle name.

It was awful.

But I still don't think a teacher's flippant remark warranted the sack. If he made fun of the dead, fair enough but he didn't

I missed the bulk of yesterday's match. Only following on the arses intermittently between other stuff I had to do.Then I finally jumped back in on the arses in the 89th minute just in time to see that Gyok had scored. It was a heart thumping experience despite not having eyes on the game. Then the euphoria of Dowman's goal.

I spent the entire day watching highlights of both goals and that Calafiori block on loop from every source I could find. I can only imagine what it must've been like for those in the stadium. Man.. what a fucking rush!

De Zerbi has been mentioned solely because of his success at Brighton and his style of football. The problem is, Spurs would need to change the support network to allow him a chance to succeed.
The next problem, or maybe the principal one, is that hardly any players at the club are suited to his high intensity, high possession played in high up tje pitch........ similar in mamt ways to......Big Ange. That went well.

They are fucked. Serves them right for lurching between styles of play and picking up managers based on their 'name'.

Personally, I'd like to see de Zerbi installed. They'd have a short term upturn (hopefully in the Championship) followed by the inevitable Contè-esque meltdown.

As for yesterday what a fantastic way to cap off a pretty turgid game. Everton were a difficult opponent and were unlucky not to get anything from the game, but Arsenal were resilient and fought to the end. It was a a clear penalty on Kai as anyone with eyes in their head could see! As for our young Master Dowman I have wanted to see boy Max get a chance for a long time and was elated to see Arteta bring him on albeit only for the closing stages. What a way to announce your arrival on the Premier League stage. Imagine if he had been on for longer? He should definitely start on the right in Sunday's League Cup final.

Elsewhere, can anyone explain the Chav huddle around the ref? Which one was actually gobbing him off, or were they taking turns?

There’s a few nice slow mos of Max’s run out there. When he skins the last defender you assume he switched the ball from his left to his right foot but he actually just kind lets the ball roll and just does him with his body shape. Just effortless mastery of dictating what the defender does.

I was critical of the Mosquera sub, thought it was a defensive sub. But looking back, it was so early in the game that I can understand now that Arteta didn’t want to go gung ho with Cala also on the pitch .
Fair play and a good reason why he is manager of Arsenal and I am not. I could manage Spurs though.

I didn’t get the general sentiment in here yesterday either. There is a difference between playing with a lack of intent and lacking telling quality in moments. Generally speaking we were playing some decent stuff. There was no shortage of desire yesterday in either half. But yes there was a lack of quality but Max solved that.

It’s amazing what one moment can do to lift the team.

We need to MAXimise this and inject that energy into the rest of the players who have looked lethargic and just going through the motions for the past couple of months. It’s understandable with the pressure these guys are under and the anxiety that is contagious around the ground, in the social media and places like here.

I think we’ve got enough to sneak past Leverkusen on Tuesday, and the cup final on Sunday will be a very tight affair, but how much more of a mental boost will it be if we win both and Citeh flop out to Real?

Whisper it, the good guys are close to achieving something special this season.

🙏🏆

There was more intent and vertical passing from us yesterday, especially in the first 15 minutes, but it was worrying how it dropped off as Everton asserted themselves with their movement and crisp passing. That dowman goal reminds me of that young Theo Walcott run against Liverpool in the CL many years ago. Think it was adebayor that scored.
No, sorry, Theo’s run was all pace and he struggled to keep the ball under control. But Max just glided, he makes football look like poetry, that shimmy to take out the second defender was sublime, looked so easy but few players can do it like the defender wasn’t there. This is another level. Utterly, magnificently sublime.

Btw I just stopped at the Clackett Lane services where Ian Wright first met Dennis Bergkamp by chance after we signed the Dutchman. Never stopped here. Needed to pay my respects! A new era, it must be!

Get past Leverkusen and then the Carabao Cup final, but for now, 9 points clear and a star has just been born. Rejoice in Max 🤩

A good morning grinning Arse to all.

Just saw the hammers game highlights.
Haaland could have had a mickey assist but was wayward.
Our old boy mavraponos is a gooner surely.
So much defending as if his life depended on it.

Football symmetry. The ball is round.

Will be over for the B'mouth match with my daughter for her first visit. Hope to see some of the old guard!

That dowman goal reminds me of that young Theo Walcott run against Liverpool in the CL many years ago. Think it was adebayor that scored.

Morning all.
Still dancing on that 90s dance floor.
I just happened to mention at half time that I’d consider bringing Dowman on with 20mins to go… esp after his FA cup performance… he was really looking the part then too.
He has pace, balance, two dribbling feet, good running style, shoulder drops, and a great understanding… plus he is completely fearless.
Just what we need in the run in… and if we do go on to win it…he would have played a major part in lifting us when we needed it most.
Quite incredible that a 16 yr old could do that.

We were looking a bit stale bar some good movement and link up play with Havertz back. But we were too slow to pass for much of the game generally. I’m just grateful that we are not talking about that penalty decision because it was the worst of the season and demonstrates how corrupt some officials are.
Take a look who was in VAR yesterday…and the fact the premierleague released a statement to say contact was ‘minimal’ and that Havertz was already on his way down - no… no he wasn’t!

Arse.

Epic stuff! I am a believer again, city aren't much of a threat really. We'd need a catastrophic reversal in form from here. Popped into the arses at half time, super negative vibes which I didn't really get, thought we were largely good all game. Not superb, but more conviction, more forwards passing, more obvious determination to score. Eze was much better, particularly in the second half when we really chased a goal. That's where you want him, on the edge of the opposition box.

Techno bpms. Exactly!

Your colleague Tim is a soothsayer;
"I think Dowman can be used as an impact player towards the end of the season, with Merino and Odegaard injured and Havertz’s reintroduction requiring kid gloves, there is a role for Dowman as a left-footed midfielder."
