How do other £300,000 per week main attacking players in top teams manage it? Earlier Blogs said he’s just having a bad season, as if we can just put it to one side. He’s lost pace/reactions/overall zing he used to have. Yeah, if this is the new norm we are getting massively short-changed. Starboy or not, loved as he is, if this is the best our “best” player can do, frankly we’re fucked. To coin Arteta’s phrase, he’s nowhere near, nooowhhereee neaaar, the level required at this level. I’m gonna over-egg it again, he looks like a Sunday league player right now. And because it’s Saka, he’s avoiding a lot of criticism that tbh should be coming his way. I really, really hope he steps up, because Ben White or no Ben White, post-injury dip or no post-injury dip, this is astronomically short of what we should be expecting.

nah….you can pretend it’s a quark, you can pretend it’s a boson, you can even pretend it’s a hadron but it’s a bug and you are just papering over the crackers! 🤪
This has been said before by Saka is significantly hampered by not having Ben White in the team making the overlapping runs. Saka has been doubled up on for a few seasons now, but that hasn't stopped his output. Without White in the team making those runs and taking a defender with him, it gives Saka no chance. If you also subscribe to the theory that post surgery Saka has lost some pace, it is concerning to think how his recent displays could become the norm.
That PSG Chelsea game reminded me of an Emirates era Wenger team that didn't know when to just take the result on offer in the first leg, manage the game properly and go back home for the second leg with only a goal difference.
Instead they were all over the joint and lost the tie.
In other pointless news former 27 year old Arsenal target Douglas Luiz is dating Edu's 19 year old teenage daughter Duda.
Not a disastrous result by any means but it does put into context all that stuff about the "best team in Europe".
The new CL league stage is a way to stuff more games into the schedule while guaranteeing that the biggest clubs aren't knocked out too early. So topping the league stage is good, but that's about it.
Real CL starts now, our guys have to find a gear.

Interesting analysis on BBC
At one point in Wednesday night's game, I saw Eberechi Eze pick the ball up from deep, take a touch, then very smoothly roll the ball out to Jurrien Timber. It was just inside the Arsenal half. He had got on the ball quite a bit up until that point. It struck me that it wasn't the first time it had happened.
Indeed, I then counted half a dozen times in which a similar situation unfolded.
Eze had 56 touches of the ball against Bayer Leverkusen - he was involved, he was a central part of the team, I was positive - but the trouble Arsenal had was that he wasn't involved in the part of the pitch where we want Eze to be.
If I think about the times he has been able to cause maximum impact this season, it has been in the box and around the edge of the opposition penalty area by the D.
It felt like he never really got into those positions on Wednesday, which felt like a microcosm of Arsenal's overall performance.
In attack, they faced a well-organised side who were happy to let the Arsenal players have the ball, but only in areas where it did little damage.
In Arsenal's defence, other than the goal Leverkusen scored, they offered just as few opportunities.
But the role Eze played just felt like a bit of an explanation as to why the game was low on events - for both teams.
If Arsenal want to get over the line in competitions in Europe and domestically, they have to find a way to lean into Eze's skills.
Wednesday night felt like he was doing a bit of an Martin Odegaard impression. It didn't quite work.
Saka wasn't great, but also often had 2-3 defenders on him. The set up with TImber drifting way forward and inside too often left Saka marooned. I'd definitely like to see a fully fit Saka/Ode/White t...

Good, so draw them in and then pass the fucking ball towards the players in space. Saka has had a decidedly average season if you're being generous.

yep, when you log in you're sometimes defaulted to comments from the latest post available, not the one you launched the arses window from.
I had this happen last night too, was in the main Arses, logged in and started commenting thinking I was still there but I wasn't.
It's those same login bugs from when they did the revamp.
When you login, sometimes it works normally but sometimes it bounces you to a different Arses (I think it takes you to the most recent, like a liveblog post or a contributor post) and sometimes it glitches completely and gives you gateway errors and such.
It happens quite frequently, Tom should be able to reproduce it for debugging

Not ideal that Zubimendi is struggling a bit in the business end of the season but he was near flawless up until the last few weeks. I think it's harsh and he deserves some leeway but no doubt we need his performances to pickup.

I do think Rice in the 6 would be an interesting move. And if it's true that Zubi's lack of forward momentum or boldness is down to fatigue, then it shouldn't be ignored and Arteta could be bolder himself and rest him. As for further forward, with Havertz back, Eze getting a run, I still would like to see both bringing some more directness and support to Gyökeres. I'm surprise Arteta has tinkered so little with the front four. he seems to be content with Martinelli/Trossard on the left and Saka/Madueke on the right, an either or Gyökeres/Havertz up top and Eze expected to be an Ødegaard type in the 10 which is not his game at all. And I agree that we need Ødegaard back sooner rather than later, but, much like Saka, his form has been patchy to say the least. The best of both would make a huge difference to this team's play, but we're yet to see it happening with any lasting effect and I don't want to raise the alarm yet, but time is running out. Needs to be very soon, Saka could do with a top performance this weekend against Everton. We all could use that.
Arse!
well in, ollie!
whew! coulda been better, coulda been a whole lot worse. England got slapped around a bit in the first legs but for us a draw at the home of statistically one of the stingiest home sides of the competition this season is not too terrible.

No NB you're right that that element of his game has definitely diminished; possibly in part down to his reticence/fatigue/managerial instruction(?)and partly down to the lack of movement/abilities/stamina of the forward players. But he rarely shirks a tackle or a challenge. The whole team's been in an extended fug that, in the absence of (top form) Ode, I had hoped Eze might be able to help dispel but it isn't happening - yet.
SP2 had an interesting idea today that Rice swap with the No36 to free up some of the latter's creativity but really we just need more shots on target. From anywhere and anybody.
Over the last few games I have seen Zubimendi, alongside his unrecognized mass of micro-interceptions and deep metronome work, spray some superlative passes (not enough right now, sure) forward to the...
Ok Salaar, you've seen him in real-time, over the course of a whole game, so I have to accept that your observation trumps my very disjointed perception. No doubt Gyökeres's clumsiness hasn't helped things. Sp*rs extend ticket deadline amid relegation fears
Speaking of Igor Tudor and Sp*rs...
Relegation-threatened Tottenham have given their fans "an extended period" to decide if they want to renew their season tickets amid the "seriousness of the current league position" of their men's team.
Sp*rs gave their supporters until Tuesday, 27 May last year - two days after the end of the 2024-25 Premier League season - to decide if they wanted to renew for the present campaign.
This time around, fans did have until Tuesday, 26 May - two days after this season's final league match to renew - but, in a message sent to fans, they are now giving them between Thursday, 12 March until Sunday, 7 June to reach a decision.

Cowardly, like "bottling" is a loaded word, I accept that it may even come across as hyperbole or unwarranted. But to me, I'm seeing him time and again pass up passing opportunities to forward players in front of their markers demanding the ball, for his safe get out back to Gabriel or across to Hincapié. There was a passage of play where he refused the forward ball three times to play a back pass, with the forwards holding hands up in the air, urging him forward with gestures.
To me any mention of minutes played, tiredness, acclimatisation to a tough league is nothing more than an excuse and cannot account for what is a decision, a lack of boldness, a clear lack of confidence that the player receiving will be able to cope and that, for your anchor in midfield, sets more than the tempo, it sets the quality of the attack.
People can disagree, but there's lots of `arsenal talk about Zubi and his negative passing. Cowardly may sound very strong, but it's out of frustration, damn this player should be bolder and his unwillingness to be so may cost us dearly.
No doubt we need a spark but I am still not convinced Kai is the answer in midfield. He sees the passes and has the technical quality but I just don't think he is blessed with the physical traits and athleticism to do it fluidly.
Saka wasn't great, but also often had 2-3 defenders on him. The set up with TImber drifting way forward and inside too often left Saka marooned. I'd definitely like to see a fully fit Saka/Ode/White trio again, but not sure when its happening.
Madrid did that to City without Mbappe and Rodrygo. Ouch.

I agree with the physical competition. I think the technical level of the PL is debatable. Leverkusen kept the ball so well and even Porto when we played them were technically good.
I think the PL has moved towards physicality and lost a bit of technical quality.

And aren't forward passes the main responsibility of those...further forward?
Just don't buy it. Maybe for Rice Zubi and Timber but Saka had a month off, Saliba hasn't played for 2 weeks. Eze, Martinelli definitely can't be fatigued.

There are a lot of Arsenal fans skilled in finding excuses for our poor play; tiredness, low-blocks, slowly coming back from injuries, managers’s tactics, new players yet to gel, you don’t understand ball!
The harder reason is that, attack-wise, we’re just not all that. I saw a reel of Saka’s touches last night; so poor. I could feel sorry for him but he’s on £300,000 a week. There’s really no excuse, I’m getting Özil/Aubamayeng vibes, both great on their day, both went awol after they signed da ting!
We need a massive step-up if we’re gonna win anything. Right now, I’ll be honest, we don’t look like we can win anything. That would be so hard to take for all of us and for all of them. I don’t think we’d recover. So Arteta has to find a solution and they have to play with more bravery; Zubimendi’s cowardly refusal to pass forward being the main culprit. Someone needs to give him a stern talking to; tiredness isn’t an excuse for constant safe passing.
Noticed a lot of people saying we were tired again last night but I can't really accept that. 90% of that team have had an entire week off. In all the previous CL games we didn't look tired but coincidentally in the first game where a loss would have been consequential we all of a sudden look tired again.. This team have a mental block, we've seen it in the league too. It's going to be a tortuous run-in unfortunately, hopefully there's some reward for enduring it.
I don't think Zubimendi is particularly secure defensively.
He doesn't need to be fullscale Gilberto when we keep Timber, Salibs and Gabi back .
We played some better football with Mosq at Rb cause rest of team compensated and pushed up
He can do both roles for sure but for me , Zubi starting attack as he did earlier in year and sneaking into box , while Rice goes high court press and general Tazmaian Devil is where we need to stand ...
I don't think Zubimendi is particularly secure defensively.
Zubimendi is too deep in general. You don't necessarily have to be deep lying to dictate play. I think he's wasted as a 6, personally.
He can do both roles for sure but for me , Zubi starting attack as he did earlier in year and sneaking into box , while Rice goes high court press and general Tazmaian Devil is where we need to stand on opposition teams throats rather than the more reserved option were going for

I think it's Rice who should do the CDM job. Far more naturally equipped.
Zubi is essential to this team and hopefully we can , allow the freedom of 4-1-4-1 , in the near future .
................Zubi
Noni....Eze....Rice... Saka
Better balance to it , options of going down the flanks , control game higher , allow Zubi build, love Rice but him starting attacks deep isnt best use of his skillset, get him higher in midfiled , more blood n guts type performance, leave Zubi mind the house .
I think the change to double pivot coincides with no Cala, no Ode, no Merino and use of more traditional Hinc at LB.
Piero has been superb but we are more deeper lying with him in defence and if we just push higher and get Cala into Lb/investing it should add a dimension whilst not leaving us exposed .
I think and dont know shit compared to Arteta but the principle is support Saka , get a runner about him to distract defences .
But for me if we get Cala fit , cala goes free role and the RB , holds position better should be the principle .
Give Noni freedom , have Timber as holding RB , nobody gets past him but push midfiled higher , leave Zubi as Pirlo type midfiled dictator and cala do calastuff .
Saka on left maybe breath of fresh air he needs and chaos we need to put in our attack as were too structured and rigid just now, too easy to forecast who and how we will play and in major part thats due to bad luck of injuries but the above plus Kai in a midfield 10 role or up top and we become more dynamic more high press whilst loosing nothing at the back
In Calas absence if MLS was more defensively astute we wouldn't have changed to double pivot but as Pieros not that man , we went all in on our right side and just now the roles are unintentionally revered and our RB is where Saka should be

I agree. If only Arteta had listened to all the "experts" here, we, too, could have shipped 3 or more goals last night.
Our attack has issues, no question, but I think some of the analysis as to way is misguided. The whole 'too many cooks spoiling the broth' thing from Stillman is just not applicable.
Having truly usable options in every attacking position for the first time ever shouldn't be a hindrance... and Jesus is currently the offensive player in the squad at present that you could say is truly surplus.

Eze, Havertz and Gyökeres on the pitch at the same time. Please make it happen.
Our best recent game was when Havertz and Gyökeres were on the pitch together, yet Arteta has subbed one for the other in the past three games I think. Is it just fitness concerns for Havertz, easing him back in? Because I really hope that Arteta doesn't sleep on this combo and miss so much potential still left for this season.

Then he stopped the big brain nonsense and put the players in the right positions and overtook us. Cunt
Also fuck Guardiola
Hope he wins nothing again, and has to pretend the charity shield counts
We may hope, but we may have to prepare for some harsh realities too, At least it seems like they're going out of the CL, but that does mean they have some more rest days to focus on the league. We really have some work to do.
Fear not anyway as there is....a new Arsenal Merchandise drop.

Arsenal are the undisputed champions of social media, marketing and merchandise. They've gone way ahead of everyone this year. Some of the videos of players hawking clothes and merch have been truly outstanding and demoralising at the same time. Main difference from Late period Wenger ?!..
Wonder if we will end up selling one of Lewis Skelly or Nwaneri next season. The manager should trust MLS at least to give him some substitute mins. Zubimendi is running on fumes and currently rarely offers any sort of forward passing. Seems like Rice is doing all the legwork whether be it offensively or defensively.
When they have it they’re still not making it happen nearly enough.
Because it's always against a set defence with multiple players on their backs.
Guys like Martinelli and Gyok are most effective 'in transition' yet they play in a highly risk averse side who only ever attack versus a set team.
We don't have lots of bad forwards, we have a bad attacking set up.
I've said it so many times but singling out individual forwards for underperforming is missing the point.
They're not all bad players all of a sudden.
The ball simply doesn't arrive with them quick...

It’s not much different from years past, essentially blood and guts, cloggers only now on perfect pitches with the superior fitness. Is it technical? I think it’s still more about tactics, negative ones at that.
Italian football, for all its present misery, is still technically superior. But yes your point still stands that, as with years gone past, the physical demands of English football takes it out of players and teams in a way it doesn’t in the other major European leaguez.
I've said it so many times but singling out individual forwards for underperforming is missing the point.
They're not all bad players all of a sudden.
The ball simply doesn't arrive with them quickly enough or in dangerous enough areas.
How many times was Saka on the touchline last night whilst Timber occupied a central position high up the pitch? It's just bad use of your resources.
Is our league that competitive.?

Have you been watching the PL this season? Regardless of like for like comparison with other leagues, think about how the games are played.
Teams like PSG, Bayern just do not face that level of technical and physical competition every week

I think it shows British teams have technical trouble playing out from the back . When they do the high press , it can leave teams caught on the break.
Thankfully Arteta has a big enough handbrake on for us not to get caught in the break , like Wenger champions league days of the past

We could do with him better now. Madueke still raw, Eze still fits and starts. Havertz still Havertz. We need it to click somewhere or this will unravel and once the first domino falls it may get ugly. Still hoping, but…

Unfair to be playing two opponents at the same time!
Heh
Gonna get nixed by Bodo/Glimt obviously.

Arse!
Well in, Ollie!!
Morning all!!!
Nobody's good enough behind us is my feeling.. I'd be less convinced if City had at some point managed any sort of momentum but they never did even with their new recruits .
City have matchwinners, several of them. We have to beat them at Wembley and the Etihad.

Bayern look rampant. Maybe they’ll peak but they look favourites to me. PSG and Real still have those scintillating attackers, real attackers. City have them too. If we had attacking players like any of those four teams, with our defence, we’d be walking it. For all the talk of systems stifling football (often the excuse brought out to defend our lacklustre attack), individual brilliance is still the determining factor. Barcola, Kvara and Dembele goals were just magnificent for example. Do we have anyone who does that regularly? Not Saka, not this season. Clock’s ticking on him. Big contract, he has so much to live up to and he doesn’t look anywhere near it for me.

If we only win one, think that'll be the league. But I think we'll do League/League Cup at least.
We Everton this Saturday, sneak past Leverkusen and then beat City in the league cup final then yes we may gain enough momentum. But you just don’t know with this team, I just don’t feel it from the attackers, they still look like they’ve forgotten how to play and are struggling to remember.
More than one pundit including Elliot “Yankee Gunner” has been saying what I’ve felt for a while, might be time to drop Zubi, play Rice as the 6 and flank him with Eze and Havertz and eventually Ødegaard. We need as many of our creators and playmakers on the pitch, we need to end this horseshoe horseshit! We’re not winning anything with that turgid football. I don’t know if these players and manager have it in them. The next couple of weeks will tell us alot.

Easier as in freedom to play football and if were good enough , then excellent but no excuse CL offers chance to play exciting football and lads must be enthusiastic about it and bring it

Champions league is actually easier competition, PSG leaking goals , Madrid struggled v Maureenio fc and looked wide open v citeh115 , so leverkusen were always going to be spritely and tough so decent result , beat them at home , move onto next leg , see what Barca are made of after Joelin and Bruno mane and scar young Pedri and Lamal
Gonna get nixed by Bodo/Glimt obviously.

So strange to be in this position where we’re in all four competitions and could theoretically win them all, but if you take a step back and look at how our midfield and attack gas been playing for most of the season, symbolised most harshly by Saka’s overall disappointing displays in relation to what we were expecting, we could just as easily come away with nothing. We are in the limbo state: Schrödinger's Arsenal 😭😂
Difficult to chant but that might work.
Kai given freedom, vik as focal point was actually decent early part of last night .
LW is a major problem , Nelli is an old favourite but we need more from him ..... can't someone just ignite into peak Pires or Freddie , even Wiltord or Wreh goal scoring form...
Kai in the 10, Eze on the left interchanging , Vik up top
Difficult to chant but that might work.
Heh, same guy with his two daughters gets on the bus as they did yesterday afternoon when I went into town.
Can our final third killer please stand up.

Ha! Hadn't been too bad so far but this morning makes up for it.
I agree with Blogs... Why the fuck is Timber so high up??
Hes from Amsterdam mate and he wanted to get high

We've discussed this before, and still struggling to make sense of it. I remember my frustrations with his prominence in the opposition box. It's such a bizarre set-up.

There's probably a pun to be made there.

Morning all , well its a cunt of a morning but decent result .
For weekend id go with Saka on the left Nonaldinho on the right ...
Saka should gain confidence from going against Jake O Brien or Seamie Coleman
Plus they won't be expecting it and won't have doubled up on him .
With Cala at LB it would add a variation to the left to break down defensive toffess
Ha, excellent, you had me worried after the first few words.
It's a quirk more than a bug
I'd say that's a good word for it.
does what you’ve described here seem like a ‘bug’ to you ollie?
or is it me doing something wrong at login?
A bug of sorts, you're not doing anything wrong.
Don't need no Neo to save us, then?
It's a quirk more than a bug
Should I be worried about a bug in the arse matrix?
Back in Blighty, was a good d trip, a poor performance and a ground out result.
Big fish to fry on Saturday.
Early flight!

It's a known bug.
Dreadful weather here this morning...
Raining in Ireland??
Never!
yep, when you log in you're sometimes defaulted to comments from the latest post available, not the one you launched the arses window from.

Glad the bus stop isn't far from the hotel, it's blowing a hoolie (with rain).
Heh. It's a standing joke in our family when we go on holiday that when we drive through the tunnel in Limerick to get to our place that it's always raining on the other side of the Shannon. Doesn't matter the time of year, they're all expecting it now.

Nice one. We were a bit all over the plaice.
Off to check out. (unfortunately not over there on Saturday, see you another time soon hopefully)

Sure, fire them over - but chances are you defaulted to the live blog post rather than yesterday's blog post
From what I remember i read the Matchday Blog/Arses earlier in the day on my mobile…
then, i logged on very late with my Work mobile and posted on the Matchday Arses…
but, when i picked up my personal mobile again, i could read 2 different Arses’ copies (1 on each phone) both looking like they were the real Arses! (if that makes sense?)

I have a nagging feeling that our LB situation is not yet resolved. I was thinking about this last night watching Hincapie, that Arsenal has had 5 LBs over the past 3 or 4 seasons (Zinchenko, Tierney, Myles, Calafiori and Hincapie) and I believe Arteta will make it 6 by the start of next season. I see this morning. by chance, that there are BBC rumours of Arsenal going for Livramento (good player btw). I think Hincapie has done alright, but I'm not convinced by his quality on the ball. There seems to be a sloppiness in our play, especially in attack, that wasn't there in previous seasons and players like Hincapie turn up in the right positions often and take many of the chances going forward, but with no real quality. Our attack is really misfiring atm, especially when you look across Europe, and I really hope we can get things clicking in he next few games because we really need to.
Blogs, i stumbled across 2 different, parallel versions of the Arses last night; each with different conversations (a bit discombobulating when you’ve only slept 3 hours in the previous 24).

I took screenshots in the unlikely event you were interested but, is Tom aware/fixing this phenomenon?
Arse! Well in Ollie
I would gladly take the draw yesterday with a win on Sat rather than the opposite.
Another three points and some pressure on City please.
And Saka we need you back desperately. Hope he takes his subbing off personally and gets back in form.
Lets not forget he won us the three points against brighton.

Not surprised at the visible expression of frustration. It's utterly insane to me that elite professionals see the pass is on but choose not to time and time again. It must be the excessive caution so many people have accused the manager of, but I think fatigue of the mind and body plays a part.
Our ponderous, turgid approach is deeply concerning. Arteta and the coaching staff need to instill in the players the mantra of simplicity. See a pass, make it; see space, move into it; see a shot, take it.
Odds on we get a story/quote about Saka being sick before the game.
Arse!
Well in ollie!
Morning all.
I hear stretching your arse can be rather painful....
Oh, matron!
Oh I didn't stretch my arse.

arse!
Got excited by that one counter, hoping that the zip that has been so lacking for much of the second half of the season had returned. Alas, it was a false dawn. I thought the perfomance thereafter was very worrying indeed. So slow, and disjointed. The lads, collectively and individually, seraiously need to step it up for the return leg. That goes for Arteta, too.
Anywho, it's coffee time!
Arse. Well in Ollie
Cost of living crisis so bad, us Arsenal fans have to live off sausages every gameday in hope we get to sip champagne at the end of season. Someone should tell senor Arteta caviar once a while would be nice.
Oh I didn't stretch my arse.
