A couple of thoughts in that final passage of play leading to Kai's goal.

-Kepa's long kick was atrocious. Moon balled it and it didn't even make it to the center line. For me you've got to start our best XI in the final.

-Dec's first time left footed cross was absolutely sensational right in stride.

No it didn't last at all. Ultimately the practical thing to do is send players back and leave your big boys in the box which theoretically still gives you the advantage as the superior set piece team. I'd love to see us call their bluff though lol.

Will be interesting to see how Mikel and Jover deal with that strategy going forward because they absolutely will. Personally I'd probably play it short and approach the box with a three man advantage and watch those players scramble back.

Way too early to be lauding up multiple pots at this stage. Any one match can go tits up - just see the late goals we’ve conceded à la Sunderland, Liverpool, Utd. Sure, we’re capable, but it’s hugely dependent on a bit of luck; 100% concentration; referee moments and worldies from the opposition.

If you’ve got to score, and your gameplan is, for the most part, about containment of the opposition than actually trying to score, then I think you’re open to some criticism. On the one hand, I get that you might decide not to come to Arsenal and open up, but the risk you take when you go that route is that you make the decisive part of the game too short. Why try and score for 90 minutes when you can do it for 30 minutes instead?”

This is, to be fair, exactly what we did at Anfield in ‘89. Nobody remembers or cares about the nothingy first half in a game where we needed two goals because we did the business in the second.

Chelsea didn’t. It’s a somewhat risky strategy for the away team, but not an entirely unreasonable one, especially when you consider that our defence has been a bit uncharacteristically shaky of late, and Chelsea have about 30 notionally zippy and/or proactive attackers available to them. But yeah they couldn’t pull it off, we were just too good (apparently. didn’t watch, going to have to find a dodgy stream for the final - been a while since I’ve had to do that).

They can take turns running the opposing right-back ragged, knowing that they don't have to conserve their stamina for 90 minutes because the other one is waiting to take over. I remember towards the end of yesterday's game, I don't know whether Timber had got caught upfield or, more likely, that he'd gone to help the central defenders, but Martinelli found himself one on one defending our right flank in an orthodox right-back position. He did pretty well, too. Even when he has a stinker up front, which is becoming rarer, he contributes with his defensive work, and never seems to run out of juice.

I definitely think there's a fear of losing the ball. He was very secure last night and didn't try to take on the defenders tight on him when you feel he wants to. There's always the risk it doesn't work out. But there are moments where he's freer, but usually has two or three defenders around him, because it's that well defended space which Gyökeres suffers with too.

I think the Eze-Havertz-Gyökeres combo for that cup goal was instructive. It was three direct passes, Eze's was from deep, to Havertz in that key zone who passed straight into Gyökeres making the run he loves to make. We need more of that.

We have had other players over the years who often disappointed but fulfilled their promise in that derby atmosphere- Charlie Nicholas and Tony Woodcock spring to mind. It's an obvious point but I wonder if he is struggling to feel free and express himself while adhering to Mikel's disciplined approach. His costly defensive lapse agianst Villa has only compounded this.

I agree with this as well. We know where he does the most damage and he needs the ball in those areas. I do think that Rice and Zubimendi could look for the direct ball into him a bit more, but they all seem to want to play it safe. Madueke and Martinelli too could look to get it into him first, because he's the one who, if he's facing goal in that area outside the box, can find the ball to the front three. It's not happening with Eze or Ødegaard enough either. Havertz is the only one who seems able to receive in those spaces.

As for the front three not working, I think it's more about individual issues. Madueke was not able to get a run on Cucurella and seems to rely on pushing the ball ahead and using his pace and strength to beat the defender. Still not enough artfulness to his play. Martinelli did better, but the issue is more about that 10 role and how it affects Gyökeres. Eze kept receiving deep with his back to goal and defenders on him. The team as a whole are still not getting those through balls for Gyökeres to run on to, which is his meat and drink. Havertz so far is the only one who has managed to do it, which is why I was a bit surprised Arteta subbed Gyökeres for Havertz, but in the end it turned out to be the right choice. If we crack that channel, there's no team that can stop us. Please keep Havertz injury-free till the end of the season.

The feeling you get is that the var team looked at intent. Did the defender try to bring martinelli down vs did he prevent us from attacking the goal with a high boot.
No way should that be considered not a clear and obvious error.

I don't know which channel I was watching, but I had Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon, who was unusually compliant with the narrative of "Chelsea masterplan". At one point, Matterface described the Chelsea tactic of countering our corner routine, where we crowd the area with our physical dominance and perfect delivery by sending three Chelsea players running towards our goal as some kind of genius play.

I ws nervous, our front three were still not getting the ball, because we still haven't found a way to get Eze receiving on the turn or in space in near the box, but another defensive masterclass and Hincapié, as raw an impulsive as he can be sometimes, deserves praise next to the other three generals and Rice who again was imperious.

And Havertz with the rapier finish at the end. Absolutely perfect! Wembley here we come!

“He got the ball first” is the argument. That’s enough for them to rule it out. If ref had given it, he’d have been sent to the tv and chalk it off.

Not saying that’s right, but in the end it doesn’t matter and if these things ‘even themselves out’ we’re due a few in return before the season ends

Nice interview with Lee Dixon on radio 5 just now. Was asked about the game not being particularly pleasing to the eye. He spoke about his time in a team that was known as one nil to the Arsenal. He said they gave the ball to Wright who would score and then the defence shut up shop and they won the game. As a player they didn’t care a jot about how the game looked and he said they gave current team wouldn’t care either

There was some kind of bullshit that he got the ball but the full human motion took Martinelli out. The total shit they come out with just to not give Arsenal a penalty is totally bewildering.

Hope Marseille are not turning him into a thug.

I think Chelsea's biggest mistake and the reason for their gameplan was that they were convinced they drew the first leg 2-3 so only needed to win 0-0 in the second leg.
Great stat from Ambrose. Unless they were expecting an outside the box worldie, they didnt trouble us really for 90 mins.
Masterplan indeed. Heh.

They've even removed the 'crowd noise only' option on Canal+.
So last Saturday, after about an hour, I ended up muting the sound completely. It's not even that they are anti-Arsenal, it is that they talk a lot of shite. French commentary used to be decent, but that's turned to rubbish too, mostly.

Arse,

Well in, lads. Try to make it a bit more enjoyable next time though eh? 5-0 would have been appreciated.

It's good not living in the U.K, or probably an English-speaking country generally. Swedish commentators aren't at all infected by all the bias and agendas and bantz, and just commentate. Sometimes they get excited when they see a former Gooner in the stands, that's fine by me.
