Sorry about that. I found it on X from a regular Arsenal poster. Should have quoted his name to be sure. Yeah, a lot of these people feed on mugs like me! Democrats love playing into the Republicans hands. Trump part 1 only happened because Democrats chose an unelectable candidate and I think Trump part 2 happened because they did it again. Constantly pushing further and further left or right is not going to get people talking, it's going to further alienate them to the point of having cemented ideologies with zero room for compromise. The death of compromise is the reason we are where we are... in my opinion.

I'm not so sure about that. The American Dream is basically an impossibility right now. There is something fundamentally wrong with what we base or decision making on (read not people) and most people realize that we and esepcially our children are utterly fucked if we continue down this path.

My brother put it quite succinctly when I talked to him a few months ago. He was telling me a story how he was chatting with his neighbors who were going on and on about how much all of their houses were worth. My brother told them he'd give it all up in a heartbeat if it meant his three kids would be able to afford to buy a house.

At this point for me being centrist means you want to stick your head in the sand and pretend problems don't exist.

The loud constituents, not the majority.

From an outsider looking it, it seems like that's actually part of the problem down there. Democrats go too far left so Republicans start going too far right and Democrats react by going even further left so Republicans in turn go even further right... It's a vicious cycle that really needs to end.

I don't know about getting rid of barriers to building, then you have a race to the bottom, it's already bad as it is. In the UK, matchbox houses are being built with plastic sheets lining the walls as a building regulation "eco" feature. It's a totally fucked up way to meet eco building regs without spending money on real bricks and real insulation which also allows air to circulate. Those "affordable" houses will be ridden with mould in a few years and eventually get demolished and replaced. All suits the landowners if not the first-time buyers who are on all sorts of dodgy leasehold contracts.

We need to build so many more houses but the actual ecological people get pushed to the side to make way for the corporates who know how to get round these regs. Just remove the use of houses and property as leverage for financiers. But that would be a little harder, as you're going up against the beasts of Wall Street and the City of London.

Trump would not have been possible without the corruption and complains to the military industrial complex and Wall Street of Clinton and Obama. The same in the UK with Blair leading to 10 years of austerity and a deepening of the structural deterioration of the UK. Trump and Farage are symptoms and no doubt they are backed by very wealthy reactionaries. Right now, I'd take sober technocrats over loons backed by religious fundamentalists.

But the left in general has failed again and again for decades, often by putting ideology and corporatised ideas of identity (minus the class aspect which is central to any understanding of alienation) ahead of serving the needs of working people, many uneducated, many with deep, personal faith. So often mocked by the left and then mocked some more when they were captured by the right, especially during Covid.

We all know the destructive force that social media has had on society but the one thing it did was expose all of the youth to different cultures and diversity. There is so much understanding and empanthy between them now largely speaking that was completely absent when I was a kid. My child has not had to deal with any of the bullshit I dealt with growing up. So I do feel optimistic about their mindset but they need to get out and vote.

There are certainly Gen Z that were brainwashed by their parents but they are a minority.

I feel like most Gen Z talk about the same thing- hopelessness of the future... they can't afford housing, can't get decent jobs, inflation, healthcare, etc. Most have a very bleak outlook of the future this administration is creating.

My take on Gavin is he has a bit of a past reputation as a typical slick champagne liberal. But since Trump has gone supernova deranged fuckwad he is the one of the few (and probably highest profile) who is fighting fire with fire and saying what needs to be said.

But he is very intelligent, very sharp witted and well spoken, and he is a good looking white male which still seems to be important for American voters.

Democratic leadership however are still really trying to understand where they need to be because it feels their constituents right now are considerably left of center. They've had enough.

he is a moderate so on social media he gets beaten up by progressives he is trying to meet with more right wing media to spread his message - he is not loved but he is very intelligent and would do a good job
The Democratic Party is much more broadly based than the current Republican sycophants
Newsom being from California makes the Republicans wet themselves as they hate SF and LA

It seems the majority of people feel so powerless that their only response is to pass around these deep fake jokes about him. The other thing is to scowl at his often incoherent sounding speeches. Neither do anything constructive except maybe make some of us feel a little more in control of our response to the madness unfolding.

Trump is a perfect foil for the people behind him, Christian nationalists and techno-pirates as he has a way of confidently taking their actual imperial plans and just saying it as if he just thought these things up. Who know, maybe he did, but it seems to me that Greenland for example, geographically would make total sense for an imperial power to want to control. Just that sober technocrats could never sell that idea, so we have this sinister clown saying out loud what most politicians and diplomats would never dare say.

I still feel uncomfortable about the people at Davos held up as the saviours of humanity. It's good cop bad cop on a worldwide scale. Bankers and technocrats are not our friends either. What a bloody mess this is!

There was a transcription error in Drumpf's FIFA award. It was actually the FIFA Piece Prize. He has already got a piece of Cuba, he's after a piece of Gaza, and a piece of Greenland, and he's taken a piece of Venezuela. One potential issue I have with the loan, though it was Marseille's sporting director (or whatever he is, Benatia) talking, not De Zerbi is they said it allowed them to finally have all positions doubled as he would play the same position as Greenwood. Who is basically irreplaceable for them this season. So I hope he will play more than this seems to imply (and still they lose those matches).
