Si he's paid by Tje Athletic to report on Arsenal and he's supposed not to report on ot as he's an Arsenal fan?

OK, so I assume that will go for any news that could potentially affect Arsenal. Qell, following that logic, he'll be relieved of his job pretty damned quick as he was appointed due to his knowledge about Arsenal.

Absolutely he was being attacked by a section of the support. But if you remember even then there were "influencers" seemingly moving as a unit telling fans that "they don't know ball" if they can't see what a genius player Havertz is.

No doubt when he moved to striker he improved, as I expected he would and he did start playing better. But he was still missing chances you'd expect a striker to bury. It's why it's so frustrating watching Haaland. He does everything so well, so pared down focused on one thing, the pace, the reactions, the body and foot positioning... sigh!

We don't have that, but we have a team and a club that is more unified than it has been for years. We have to deal with three incomplete strikers who can all give something to the cause.

Ronaldo came out of Portugal. Lots of brilliant players from Portugal. We just picked one who is lighter than a sparrow and the other who is slower on the turn than an oil tanker! I'm still holding out hope for Gyökeres. Portuguese league or not, 68 goals in 66 appearances is not to be sniffed at. Whatever magic he channelled in those two years can't have just vanished. I don't feel like I'm exaggerating at all. I see plenty of people thinking that Kai Havertz is going to come back and be in the goals. I'm all for it if he is but he (and Jesus) have never been prolific and he's been out for basically a year. I'm not sure if either Kai or Jesus have more than Viktor's 7 goals had they been fit.

I had high hopes for Gyok too but at the same time knew it can be an absolute crap shoot. Just look at Wirtz, Sesko... hell even Isak. It can take some time to settle into this team- the likes of Zubimendi and Saliba are exceptions. We've seen plenty of struggles to bed in with the likes of Merino, Eze, Havertz, Madueke, etc.

Really just seen this story too many times to get too worked up about Gyok's performance thus far. Our title aspirations certainly don't ride on his back alone.

Having said all that- between Gyok and Fabio Vieira I'd be very suspect of future purchases out of Portugal.

The problem here is you've exaggerated and that detracts from the point and that is that Havertz has always had a fair amount of support with the fans and he has played well at times and tbh filled in that CF position reasonably well over time. And there is the possibility that he comes back and improves our attack. But it's also true that there were fans who said we didn't need a striker, refused to accept the reason that many fans wanted a striker and are now acting as if Gyökeres being a disappointment is no problem because Kai is back. And I hope he comes back and plays out of his skin, because the Havertz of last season fell short when it really mattered, as the whole front line did tbf. Time for them all to deliver and hopefully they all spur each other on. That's one quality (team spirit) that Arteta has instilled brilliantly, that might overcome teams with better individual players.

We absolutely have 3 imperfect options. 4 if you count Merino. Would it have been wonderful if Vik came in and scored 20 so far and we were 15 points clear? Absolutely but I think we have plenty in the chamber. I'm more interested in the team playing cohesive fluid football than any individuals- that is going to be the real factor in winning it. I don't see the point in being hyper fixated on Gyokeres. Sure he's probably performed below expectations but he held the fort down fine and scored 7 goals. All the while the team has not really hit attacking form yet bar Bayern/Spurs. There are still developing partnerships all over the pitch and yet here we are still top. Our peak is still in front of us and we are getting our dpeth back.

We've only just seen Zubi and Ode dovetail over the last two games. Before that people were saying they were stepping on each others toes but now you are seeing signs of understanding there.

Just listen to Mikel- there's a beautiful journey in front of us. Just take it.

You are not alone. I just don’t see how the PL or its tribunal can justify waiting that long to issue the verdict and sanction. As for what it will/should be, I just have a feeling they don’t have the cajones to do the right thing. I think we're good enough to win the title without opposition fans saying we only won it due to a points deduction.

Incidentally, I would prefer a lesser points deduction attached to a 3 or 5 year transfer ban. A single year or transfer window would be totally worthless. That means no transfers in.

A transfer embargo out of the club would not be possible as it would equate to employment servitude, what I would prefer is for any transfer money accrued from sales to not be able to be used for future accounting purpose to allow for an inflated transfer pot at the end of the ban.

I'm sure that would hurt the club and would probably push out players who want to be successful.

A five year ban would mean that City would pretty much need to start from scratch.

The 115 will be swept under the carpet and that will get their tails up too.

If we can keep Gab/Saliba/Zubi/Rice/Ode fit we have enough squad strength in all the other positions to see it through, and we’ve had almost all the difficult away games.

Certainly there’ll be some ugly days ahead, but we have lots to look forward to in 2026!

Correction….it wasn’t his mistake coming short for the ball. The mistake was no one able to get into the space created when Konsa followed right up behind him but Gabriel shouldn’t have played the ball to him because the defender was so close to Gyokeres he didn’t have a chance to use the ball

I think you’ve been fair on Gyokeres.

Gyokeres against Brighton was the worst Ive seen him in an Arsenal shirt. He was so static and his frustration boiled over. He moaned at Saka even with the ball still in play and another chance was still on. For me, that was criminal.
Your assessment after that game was much kinder on him.

He was slightly better yesterday than v Brighton but he’s clearly not good enough ‘at the moment’ or doesn’t fit the system. Saka and Odegaard have had chances to play him in a bit more -yes, but they have either taken it themselves or opted for a different option. A bit selfish in a few games - yep.

I always find it enjoyable reading on here - with so many different opinions, and so many different fan favourites. It’s also great that we’re top of the league and can still see that there are areas and players that need to step it up. Whether that’s their general play or decision making. Everyone can improve, all the time.

Yesterday belonged to Arteta and his 2nd half. That’s what I’ll remember from that game. That and the genius of Zubimendi yet again.

Hopefully it’s a turning point to be more dominant and kill games off more convincingly.

Thanks for a great year of blogging Blogs, and a great year of Arses the rest of you!

I don't want to have this discussion again but of course Saka can be criticised. I just think it's strange that he's getting the blame for another player being generally quite poor.
Saka and Odegaard have had 4-6 seasons in the PL, Saka knows nothing more than English football. They, especially Odegaard, have produced numerous stinkers. Odegaard has had 4-5 very good games in the last 18 months. One was last night. He's the captain! Saka has 4 goals and 2 assists in the league all season, one is a penalty and 2 assists are dubious "last action before own goal / keeper flop". He's the Star Boy! These numbers are feeble for our candidate for Mbappe, Vinicius, Balon d'Or territory. Fine in itself, but you never really criticise either of them. This is NB's overriding point which I agree with. Havertz, Madueke, Gyökeres all get it in the neck after a poor game. Merino, too. They're not favourites, their signings uninspiring to you. Fine, all opinions are just that, doesn't matter whose they are except Arteta's. In my opinion you're ramping up the Gyökeres criticism way too much, way too quickly.

Pires was shit for longer than Gyökeres has been average! I don't remember in detail if Pires was let down by teammates, or was just too weak in that first season. But Gyökeres is definitely IMO not solely to blame for his lack of chances, and Saka/Odegaard are equally culpable as they have the vast majority of the final ball decisions, and have barely ever chosen Gyökeres regardless of the position he takes up being a good one or not.

People listen to what you say, and sometimes I think your favouritism is a little blatant!

As for Saka, there's no doubt that opponents have plans to deal with him, but he still slung in a worldie of a corner which led to our first goal. Not much they can do about that! Apart from that, we can adapt by attacking down our left wing and through the centre like we did last night. The best way to get Saka back to his best is to provide alternate threats so that opponents can't focus on him.

Sorry, but that's BS. He's had periods with a goal every two matches, then got injured. In other periods, it was the team that performed badly, not just him.

This is a team that requires the system to work in order to get results. If the system doesn't click, everyone finds it very hard to get going.

On my stream, the co-commentator was Lee Dixon. I know a lot of us think he's turned against us and can be very critical but when we play well, you can hear that he absolutely loves it. Despite sounding very hoarse. After the match, the analysis was by Robbies Earle and Mustoe, I don't envy Americans much, but I'll make an exception for them having two such intelligent pundits on their footie coverage. In Trumpland, they sound really out of place.

The analysis on MoTD suggested that the reason for Villa's ability to break on us in the first half was that we were less risk-averse going forwards, and they put that down to the presence of Saliba and Gabriel together at the back. It brings confidence throughout the team.

The hype was that we needed a striker. And that’s because Havertz wasn’t “immense”, he was good but not clinical enough in front of goal. A goal every 2 games would have been good, but so far he’s disappointed, regardless of whether it’s to do with coming from a weak league or not. Hopefully, our three strikers push on in 2026.

People need to apologize to Kai, who has been immense for us—even if he's not Haaland-levels of a striker (and who is??).

Saka is having a poor season so far, by his standards. Numbers just okay, but we've been saying every season: is this the year he explodes? So far, Trossard has been the better player.

I think Arteta can be a bit more ruthless with him, bench him, make him sweat for his position. But we know that won't happen so I just hope he turns on his special sauce in the second half of the season, because we need him flying.

It’s funny, people say Saka can be criticised but when he is there’s uproar. Loads of fans saying he’s being greedier this year and online those fans are being criticised. The reality is that criticism of Saka is considered beyond the pale by a core of fans who treat it like heresy rather a desire to see the player and the team improve.

There were a couple of games where Saka was a bit selfish with Gyokeres open. But it was a while ago now, and hasn’t really happened recently. I guess if Gyokeres had a few more goals in those games, it might have increased his overall confidence by now. Who knows.

No, it’s because he scored a goal a game for two season in Portugal that fans had a right to expect more than they’re seeing. He’s been sluggish in movement and control.

As I said in just before this, the three AMs must help him more but we do very little through the middle. Gyökeres would have loved Ødegaard’s through ball to Zubimendi. We need more interchange between the AMs and more through balls to the striker.

I agree he’s got to step up, but it’s also fair to say he’s not been getting enough balls fed into him from midfield. And I’ll say again (though it seems heresy) but Saka was again poor in distribution and a couple of times went for a shot where a short pass would have done. Saka does the same few moves. He does them brilliantly and he will get goals and assists. But yes he can make more effort to find Gyökeres. Gyökeres has blown cold from the lack of service. He must take his major share of responsibility, but this thing where Saka - the main channel of most of our attacks - cannot be criticised is getting ridiculous. He’s an important player for us but there are things he can improve and a key thing is quicker passing to the striker.

Is he expected to roar into the goal charts immediately because he played one game for Brighton and 40 for Coventry in lower divisions when he was 22yo? The tales of players taking time to adjust to the PL are as old as the hills, he should be given the same allowances as others. He's 5 months into his Arsenal and PL career, and hardly a spectacular flop.

Agree. He’s been poor. One dimensional and often static and doesn’t gamble or get in front of a defender when a cross comes in.
But his goals for Sporting often came when he was fed the ball through to feet.

Gyökeres has been making those runs but Ødegaard doesn’t pass in those situations. There was one movement before Gyökeres was taken off where Ødegaard and Gyökeres were the most advanced with one, maybe two defenders. Gyökeres’s movement was sluggish and unimaginative. Again, could be form and confidence, but didn’t look great for a centre-forward. He got subbed for Jesus who scored immediately. How must Vik be feeling?

Gabriel Jesus' printed T-shirt and post match interview had nothing to do with Evangelical Christianity. Anymore than the charm tattooed on his neck.
The Brazilian immediately ripped off his jersey upon scoring as an act of self preservation.
After nearly a year in injury imbo the idea of Emery's fangs in his carotid artery and the rest of his existence as a nosferatu were too much to bear. Gabriel had begged not to play- but the solution was formulated by that other Gabriel -Heinze-no stranger to the Dark Arts himself.
The garlic cloves in Saliba's sock were not a nod to French culinary tradition either, as many thought.
Viktor Gyokeres performance against Emery's defence was closely monitored by Declan Rice in the stand . Since being a young lad in Kingston he had always wanted to know who would win a fight between Frankenstein and Dracula. He is still not sure. He did learn that Viktor Frankenstein was the creator of the hybrid monster not the sensitive abomination itself. And that Gyok needs heading practice. So something was achieved.

How long before Arsenal’s video team do a piece on Arsenal’s Christians in prayer?!

It was definitely a statement win and a statement goal by Jesus. With Havertz back too, I think Gyökeres had better up his game sharpish.

What was interesting in the second half yesterday was Arteta finally tweaking the tactics. Last 5-6 games, we’ve been playing every second or third ball to Saka out wide, and it’s been a quite predictable pattern. But yesterday we finally went central.

Odegaard and Zubimendi were playing a double pivot first half. Looks like Odegaard is being given the license to roam and come deep and then advance when he feels. First half it didn’t work because it left a massive hole in behind which Villa exploited time and again.

Second half there was less ‘roaming’ and Zubimendi’s run pretty much forced Odegaard to play that ball through - the weight and timing of the pass was excellent.

Zubimendi is absolutely world class in my opinion. Each game he does a piece of skill or a turn that just calms everything down. It’s like time stands still for a moment. He really is something special. His finish was difficult to execute from that angle and speed, and he did it effortlessly.

Are you for real?
Heinze and Arteta have been mates for a long time. They played together.
And Arsenal’s defence has been superb, given the huge absences. I think he’s been a great addition and it seems the players and manager agree.

A Happy New Year to everyone in this Arsenal world.
Well in Mrs, don't forget to take your pills, I nearly forgot mine with all last night's excitement!
No pills for me yet, but I did bust out the Christmas spliff last night, so sure I was of a tough night in store. By the time I'd baked some bread and made two trifles for tonight (looks like the festivities will be canceled as one child is looking flu-ey and the other probably also on that path), it was 3 mins to kickoff. Spooled the live coverage back 15 minutes to give time to skin up and ingest, then watched the game some 20-odd minutes delayed from live. Smartphone and smartwatch both set to STFU and got through the first half. At halftime I checked in my beer on the Untapped beer app and aghast, I noticed Google informing me at the top of the phone screen that it was 0-0 in the 68th minute. Bugger. Onto the second half, some much needed cheese-based snacks, Gabriel scores from a bundle-y corner. Only the 52nd minute, so since Google already told me it was 0-0 in the 68th, I ignore the celebrations and wait for VAR to do its thing. Get on with it, rule it out and start again. But, what's this. The goal is given, and Martinez looks gumptious. My affected brain tries to think of ways a VAR-approved goal can subsequently be ruled out anyway, but fails. Now Villa have kicked off, so I'm confused but slightly happy. Was it 1-1 Google had showed me earlier? How the fuck can a 1 look like a 0, with or without my glasses? I go through the various available numbers to decide what I have seen. Christ, maybe it's soon going to be 8-8? Total confusion. I try to enjoy the game, confused aplenty as I am. Odegaard wind a tackle in the midfield, that can't be right. Christ, what have I smoked? Must be laced with LSD. Now Odegaard has played in Zuba, how the fuck can he miss from there? Oh, he hasn't missed! 2-0. What the fuck, Google. Trossard scores, VAR again on the case. Oh shit, a new ruling incoming, Saka is so offside that they'll not only rule out this goal, but take away the previous 2 also, ahhh that explains Google's earlier information. Classic PGMOL, new ways to fuck Arsenal at every turn. But, no. It's 3-0 now. What is this sorcery? I start to relax at last, guzzling my second beer at a faster rate. Don't dare to check it in on Untapped lest Google show me something else the brain can't process. Jesus scores a wonderful goal, I'm high and giddy with perplexed joy, even able to see him attribute his own achievements to The Other Jesus on a t-shirt without tutting. Lovely moment, and 4-0. Christ alive, I'm enjoying this. Should I skin up again? No, I might miss those 12 remaining goals. Now a bunch of substitutions are made, this is wild. Mikel has been at the special leaf himself, I decide. Watkins scores, it's the 94th minute. A brief wave of panic, thoughts of the 4-4 against Newcastle enter my addled cranium. They can't score 3 in 3 minutes, surely. Wait, is that Gervinho I see on the right wing!? Panic roars into my head and my heart in equal measures. No, it's just Madueke. I breathe again. Full-time, 4-1 and no handshakes as Emery has disappeared into thin ice. Vampiric swine. I fetch some chocolate from the kitchen, and bathe in the post-match platitudes from the Swedish studio blokes (and one remarkably pretty lass).
A substandard attempt to brush the teeth, I let the dog out into the snow for a piss, gazing at the stars lovingly to the soundtrack of canine urine splattering my grill housing. In he comes again, I lock the door and crash into bed. 4-1, it's fuckin' excellent.

That win was Arteta’s and he maybe deserves some celebration. For six games he’s somewhat struggled to get the flow going and then balance right, done enough to get points but yesterday was massive.

I am guessing he absolutely rollicked those players half time, because the first half was passive and we were lucky not to be down 2.

Second half was v v good and oh how we have missed Gabriel. Odegaard lost possession in the build up to our second goal and Arteta was almost on the pitch rollicking him… he won that ball back within 10seconds and played the kind of pass that he has been missing from his repertoire for a very long time. It’s back… because he did a second one to Gyokeres minutes later! That’s what Gyokeres needs. Feed him to feet and centrally.

Happy for Jesus. His sermon on sky sports was interesting after. Nothing against any religion but it certainly felt like church tv.

I’ve got a lot of time for Emery usually but zero time for Martinez.

It’s funny, they completely lost their mind once they went behind, it’s like they had their time wasting game plan then went straight into panic mode. Weirdly they should be used to it because they’ve comeback from behind more times that anyone this season.

As for Emery someone should tell him just because he doesn’t have a reflection doesn’t mean vampires don’t appear on camera 🧛‍♂️

Great win guys. I even managed to find a place to watch after dropping my kid off at him uni digs. 🥳

Players really stepped up in the absence of our midfield talisman. Second half felt like we were playing with a full deck.
Not easy to defeat Count Emery.
But fair to say Raya was a silver backed mirror.
Hincapie garlic flowers.
Merino running water.
Gabriel daylight.
Trossard a sharpened wooden stake.
Odegaard a gleaming silver bullet.
Zubi a Holy Bible.
Saliba rosary beads.
Jesus....well..Jesus.
Arteta was right to delay the handshake. A vampire always needs an invitation.
The late kick off and 8 minutes of injury time saw him rushing back to his satin lined coffin scared of daybreak.
McGinn and the injured Cash fulfilling their true metiers as they lifted the casket into its usual position in a bespoke, darkened recess at the back of the team bus.
Good ebening.

Well in Mrswoo (for a change)! Morning all you gooners all over the world. What a brilliant way to usher us into the new year. A Martinez fuck up. A Jesus golazo, and Unai running away into a hidey-hole. I'm all for it.
I feel this was a kind of win that was coming for Arsenal, and a kind of loss that was also coming for Villa; I think they have been scrapping wins in their lucky run and I'm delighted we were the ones to end it, after they sneaked that one past us in the last minute. I loved how we gave them a shock in the second half, a period in which they think they are usually the strongest.
Emery running away just tied it all off in a nice bow.

Although the scoreline was emphatic, we should admit it could've been a very different game had Watkins scored in the first half. I don't know if it's Villa's quality or our lapse of concentration, but I felt like they cut us through too easily, at least in that early period of the game and in its closing stages as well. The scoreline could've easily been 4-3. Not to mention Merino's foul which was very stupid. Dark arts indeed, but I would not risk it on a yellow.

Maybe this season is our season. In any other year we get punished to the max over these mistakes.
