No, no one “really said” or thought he was going to be a Haaland or Mbappe. It’s disingenuous to suggest anyone said or thought that. But plenty thought we’d get a goalscorer who would carry his form into the Prem, who had grown as a player since his wilderness days at Brighton. He didn’t seem as leaden-footed as he seems now. As I said (please read what I say rather than misrepresenting it) this club deserves an elite striker to go with its elite defenders and midfielders. Gyökeres is less than I expected. I didn’t expect Haaland who is unique and clear of any striker. I certainly didn’t expect Mbappe, who is a complete footballer skillwise. But I thought Gyökeres would have posted better numbers by now even in shots taken. 1 in 2 would not have been too much to ask given his goal-a-game for the past two seasons in Portugal. Those who watched that league regularly knew better. But in any case, he works hard, he’s had an injury to halt his progression and he has scored four goals. There is more to come, I just hope it’s enough.

Gyok slowly played his way through pre season levels to his clear best games before injury. Now coming back again. No evidence he has peaked is there?

Weirdly, despite my concerns, if he peaks at the right time and gets some confidence, there will be a hunger in him that may come in handy in the big games further into the season. I really wasn't looking at those YouTube clips right. I went over all his Sporting goals again recently and I saw how many were penalties, how many were free runs on goal and even a few that were scrambled in the box while he was in a confident mood. We need him to get that confidence back. He'll never be a Haaland or Mbappe (and this team really deserves that), but as you say, he can still do a job. He's not hiding, but team-mates are still not feeding him in enough. That has to get better.

I get what you mean NB. I wanted us to get Big Vik since the start of the rumours last year, was even disappointed when we seemed to be favouring Sesko.
But there's no escaping facts, he's just visibly not as much of a world beater as his exploits in Portugal augured.
Still doesn't mean that he can't catch fire and ramp up his goalscoring considering the quality of the teammates, much worse strikers have managed it and even ended up maintaining a decent baseline outside their purple patches. At some point Holy Gabi looked hopeless, snatching at shots, messing up simple opportunities. It seemed like something was irreversibly broken in him and only a new page would resolve that, only to ruin Crystal Palace's day twice and catch fire again. He will get going I keep the faith.

As I said (it should go without saying) I want him to succeed so badly, as we all do. But I can't pretend it's not worrying. This season he’s got so much talent in depth that he has to rotate to get the best of all of them. Nwaneri will be looking at Yamal, Estevao and other teens who seem to be getting regular game time and he’ll be getting frustrated.
Madueke said it yesterday tho, they currently give the impression of a tight unit and know they’ll get minutes. As long as results are positive, they’ll stick together.

Mr Salad and ArneSlaw is an example of it going the other way. I’d say we’re a long way from that happening in this current team.

Stay focused, win the next one!

Yeah I see what you are saying about his body language. My sense more than anything is that its just disappointment when things don't quite come off because he knows the talent he has is special and way up there. I think he's got high standards for himself.

Like when he shoots- he's expecting that thing to hit side netting. And to be fair it looks likely more often than not. He's a special talent from a goal scoring perspective. I think it's clear the area that needs work is his use of the ball and game management.

Exactly, it is absurd.

But while the majority think this public display of allegiance is OK when something good happens then I guess we have to go along with it. Maybe there should be a separate column in the table to account for which 'god' is ahead in the total count of goals for the season to see which sky zombie wins the great golden god icon? Look, the Portuguese league is a completely different to the PL. Gyökeres could bully his way past defenders with ease and obviously he scored a hatfull of goals.

It didn't help that he didn't have a pre-season, and still think he'll come good eventually... But perhaps he's underestimated the difficulty of the PL.

You can't just stand there and expect defences to gift him goals. This is the big boys league.

However, I still feel we are not playing to his strengths. Yes, he needs the service but he also needs to adjust to the ferocious nature of the league.

My outlook on religion, as someone who is not remotely religious, is that if it makes you feel better when you get up in the morning then have at it. As long as you don't feel compelled to tell me about it or use it to hurt others then whatever. And if you want to point at the sky, that's fine too.

Regarding Gyokeres- I find the conversation a bit exhausting at this point. Yes he was our long awaited striker signing and yes I wish he was scoring more.

But he is a new player in a new league, just come back from injury, and playing in a system that is still trying to find ways to fit him in. I don't doubt he's missed some runs but he's made plenty of them that weren't rewarded either. Very difficult to be a low touch guy for a system like this and be able to produce all the time unless you are named Erling.

At the end of the day we are plenty good that we don't need him to set the league ablaze. Hopefully he can find his form and can contribute to a title winning season.

Lastly the fact remains he is tied for first in the squad for PL goals at 4 along with Saka, Eze and Trossard.

A little confused by the post office.
Something ordered originated from outside of EU (I had doubts if taxes were pre-paid, probably not).
The tracking number would suggests it comes from Germany (might be an intermediate point though).

But what really baffles me is :
Customs Value €3.45 (I'd have expected more)
Country of Origin : FR (er, what?)
Import VAT €1...
Management fee from the Post Office €8 (Fuck me!)

Discount for online taxation €6 (How 'Generous!').

So you're charging me 8 euros (or 2 after discount) for your work in making me pay 1 euro of taxes?

It's not phishing either, because I got all that by entering the tracking number directly into La Poste's website, not just by clicking a link on an e-mail.

Unless it's someone sending me a gift and I have no idea.

Although still, something from Germany originating from France, though sent from the UK orginally, for which I'm meant to pay 1 euro of taxes, but can pay 3 online or 6 otherwise?
Sure it's not much in absolute value, but it's thievery!
Sponsored by both Brexit, the French state, and La Poste (who are a private company).

Merry Fucking Christmas!

Top of Two Tables Arse

Well in AI BruceBot. Morning winners.

The Gyök will come good, hopefully it starts at the weekend against the Wanderers. I agree that he never seems to get free kicks after being fouled and it seems to migrated over into the CL as well. Maybe it is because he is such a big unit, but I tend to think that were the infraction perpetrated on another, less formidable figure ,there would likely be a free kick awarded. I am not sure how he overcomes this, but he needs to figure it out. Saka was initially kicked all over the place without getting any sympathy from the refs but he seems to have developed a thicker skin, stays up on his feet now, even gives a little back which is I guess the best way to combat the bias.

we don’t have an elite striker in Gyök, Kai nor G.Jesus.

but i guess it’s a case of ‘Catch 22.’ :-

• the elite strikers will prefer elsewhere until we win the big prizes.

• it’s hard to win the big prizes without an elite striker

I’m happy if he scores against a struggling team. I don’t care where or how he scores. But we bought him for goals and, whatever the reasons and excuses, if he’s not scoring there’s a massive £65m problem. I do understand it takes adjustment and he’s not a top-of-the-line striker. If that’s all we could afford, fine. Berta’s done amazing work, but if he really did insist on this signing, he may be feeling his own pressure about pressing on him. Still, we have half a season to go, we need nothing less than a transformation in Gyökeres in 2026. Stranger things have happened. But Havertz and Jesus are waiting just in case. Best we can do for now.

Mate, how much of a break is he gonna need? It's not good. You can't pretend it isn't getting worrying. I din't expect him to be so poor technically, so heavy-footed. Sure he's been injured but this excusing his poor form for injuries. At the start of the season it was that he wasn't fit. So we let that go. Then it was that the team wasn't playing to his strengths. So we let that go. Then he scored a couple of goals, started to work hard for the team, and the "Jesus" excuse was brought out, that he is working hard for the team, that the goals will come, that he doesn't score against the big teams, but he'll get loads against the small teams. Then he got injured. He's been back for five games now, nearly a month since he was fit and playing. Against a small team, where even Jesus had a couple of chances, he fluffs his lines again.

I was one of the keenest to have him at Arsenal, because I saw his goals record, the size of him and I thought he's be a battering ram, would come in, take the team by the scruff of the neck, bag some goals. I expected a period of adjustment. But I'm very disappointed in his slow, rigid movement, his slow reactions and mostly his seeming shyness, like he's walked into a club that's too big for him.

I want him to succeed, of course I do. And I don't want to pile on more pressure, but he has to be able to take that. If a player, especially a striker, can't handle doubts and pressure, then this is the wrong club for him. He has a hell of a lot of work to do to convince the fanbase, who I can tell are all getting a bit concerned to say the least. As I said, he needs to snap out of this funk quickly!

It's because the training ground is the same hardness as the actual pitch. It's OK to play on a pitch like that but not to practise on now like that. Wenger insisted on it being like that but It means it's like playing on concrete which is very jarring. Wenger was warned and ignored the warning and I think they still use the same recipe.
He was warned by an outgoing senior groundsman but I can't remember which team he moved on to.

Someone needs to say this - the finger pointing to the sky is bullshit. God doesn't care whether the "Bible Bros" score a goal, win a game, win a title, because that would mean he doesn't respond to the prayers of other players, other teams, and the fans of the other teams. The American NFL went through this years ago, when immediately after the completion of the games players from both sides would hastily convene "impromptu" prayer sessions - so as to be seen on camera doing so.

All of us have view of one sort or another on religion. But we, players included, also have views on politics, some very strong and very personal - should we allow or even encourage players to express their particular political allegiances after a cracking goal? No.

It's performative, it's opportunistic, and unfortunately it's apparently spreading through the team that I love.
